There’s something magical about a Pasadena wedding that celebrates love in all its vibrant forms. As a Pasadena wedding photographer who specializes in capturing authentic, non-traditional celebrations, I’ve had the honor of documenting countless love stories. But J & A’s colorful lesbian wedding at Casita Del Arroyo and The Raymond? This one will forever hold a special place in my heart.
From our very first meeting, I knew J & A were my kind of couple. They weren’t interested in cookie-cutter traditions or following someone else’s playbook. They wanted a wedding that felt authentically them – quirky, comfortable, colorful, and deeply rooted in celebrating their love exactly as they are. As someone who thrives on capturing the essence of LGBTQ+ love stories, I couldn’t wait to document their special day.

Getting Ready: Embracing the Morning Magic
The day began at the Courtyard by Marriott in Old Town Pasadena, where both brides were getting ready in separate suites. The energy was infectious, music playing, a little bit of nerves, and genuine laughter echoing through the rooms.
What I love most about photographing lesbian weddings is the beautiful balance of emotions. There’s often this wonderful mix of nervous excitement, deep love, and pure joy that fills the getting-ready moments. J was adjusting her statement earrings while her best friend braided small flowers into her hair. Meanwhile, A was having an impromptu dance party with her sister while slipping into her vintage-inspired dress.
These are the candid moments that make my heart sing as a photographer. No forced poses or artificial smiles, just real people experiencing real emotions on one of the most important days of their lives. I moved quietly between both rooms, capturing the intimate details.

A Pasadena City Hall Portrait Session
Before heading to their ceremony venue, J & A decided to have their portraits at Pasadena City Hall. This historic building provides the most stunning backdrop for couples who want something elegant yet meaningful.
We spent about 45 minutes exploring the various spaces around City Hall. The grand staircase, the beautiful courtyard, and those iconic arched doorways that photograph beautifully in any light.
As a Pasadena wedding photographer, I’m constantly amazed by the incredible locations we have right in our backyard. Pasadena City Hall never fails to provide that perfect blend of historic elegance and modern romance that couples are looking for. When you’re working with clients who trust your vision and want to celebrate their authentic selves, the magic happens naturally.

The Ceremony: Casita Del Arroyo’s Rustic Romance
Then, we made our way to Casita Del Arroyo for the ceremony. If you’ve never been to this hidden gem tucked into the Arroyo Seco, you’re missing out on one of Pasadena’s most charming wedding venues. The historic building features exposed stone walls, rustic wooden beams, and that authentic Old California vibe that feels both timeless and intimate.
J & A chose to hold their ceremony inside, with rows of white chairs facing a simple but elegant altar. The space was adorned with vibrant peach and yellow florals that perfectly reflected their colorful personalities. Sunlight streamed through the windows, creating the most beautiful natural lighting for their lesbian wedding ceremony.
Guests began arriving, and you could immediately feel the love and support surrounding this couple. Friends and family had traveled from across the country to celebrate J & A’s love, and the energy was joyful, relaxed, and absolutely beautiful to witness.
The ceremony itself was deeply personal and authentic. J & A had written their own vows, and there wasn’t a dry eye in the house as they promised to love each other through all of life’s adventures.
What struck me most was how comfortable and celebrated J & A felt throughout their ceremony. This is something I’m deeply passionate about as a photographer who works with LGBTQ+ couples. Creating an environment where every couple feels completely supported and free to express their love authentically.

Reception Magic at The Raymond
Later, the celebration moved to The Raymond, a Pasadena institution that’s been hosting special occasions since 1886. The outdoor patio, where J & A held their reception, felt like stepping into a secret garden with its canopy of bamboo and twinkling string lights.
The tables were set with those same vibrant peach and yellow florals from the ceremony. The overall vibe was relaxed, festive, and perfectly suited to this couple’s laid-back yet celebratory style.
But the absolute highlight of the evening? The all-female mariachi band that J & A had hired to surprise their guests.
When these incredible musicians showed up in their stunning blue suits with silver embroidery, guitars, violins, and trumpets in hand, the entire patio erupted in excitement. This wasn’t just entertainment – it was a celebration of culture, tradition, and the kind of unexpected joy that makes weddings unforgettable.
The entire guest list was on their feet, dancing, singing along, and clapping to the beat. It was one of those magical moments where you almost forget you’re supposed to be photographing because you’re so caught up in the pure joy of the moment. Then you remember your job and scramble to capture every single angle of the celebration.

Why Authentic Lesbian Weddings Matter
Moments like these remind me why I’m so passionate about photographing lesbian weddings and other LGBTQ+ celebrations. There’s something incredibly powerful about witnessing love that’s been hard-fought and deeply cherished. Every laugh, every tear, every dance move feels more vibrant because these couples understand the value of being able to celebrate their love openly and authentically.
J & A’s wedding wasn’t about trends or Instagram-perfect moments (though we certainly captured plenty of those too). It was about two people who chose each other, surrounded by everyone who loves and supports them. It was about creating new traditions while honoring the ones that matter most to them.

The Details That Make a Difference
This kind of intimate dining experience creates natural opportunities for candid photography – the genuine interactions and connections that happen when people feel comfortable and celebrated.
The dancing that followed was pure joy. From the DJ spinning everything from classic love songs to current hits, the dance floor stayed packed until the very end of the night. This Pasadena wedding photographer loved it.

Creating Your Perfect Pasadena Wedding Experience
As a Pasadena wedding photographer who specializes in capturing authentic, joyful celebrations, I know that every couple’s vision is different. Some couples want the elegance of a ballroom reception, while others prefer the rustic charm of an outdoor celebration. Some love traditional elements, while others want to create entirely new traditions.
What matters most is that your wedding day feels authentically you. Whether you’re planning a lesbian wedding, a traditional ceremony, or something completely unique, the goal is always the same – to create an experience that celebrates your love story in a way that feels genuine and meaningful.
Working with couples who embrace their authentic selves and aren’t afraid to celebrate their unique love story is what makes my job so rewarding. When you feel comfortable and celebrated, it shows in every single photograph. The smiles are more genuine, the laughter is more infectious, and the love is more tangible.
