Inn of the Seventh Ray Wedding: Dark Romance Meets Colorful Whimsy.

There are some weddings I walk into and instantly think, “Oh, they understood the assignment.”

M & J’s Inn of the Seventh Ray wedding in Topanga was absolutely one of those magical days that reminded me why I fell in love with photography in the first place. As a Topanga wedding photographer who specializes in capturing non-traditional, colorful celebrations, I live for couples who aren’t afraid to blend seemingly opposite elements into something completely their own. M & J wanted dark and moody vibes alongside bright, playful bursts of color. They loved the romantic, twinkle lit garden atmosphere that Inn of the Seventh Ray is famous for, but they definitely weren’t muted-neutral people.

So they built a day that held both sides of their personality. A little witchy. A little fairytale. A whole lot of authentic character.

When couples tell me they’re worried their wedding vision might be “too much” or too unconventional, I always tell them the same thing: give me your weird ideas, your bold color palettes, and your “Is this crazy?” questions. M & J brought all of that energy and more, and the result was a wedding that felt like stepping directly into their own private universe, exactly what every couple deserves on their wedding day.

Getting Ready in Topanga’s Hidden Garden Paradise

Inn of the Seventh Ray sits perfectly tucked into the lush green curves of Topanga Canyon, and honestly, the location does half the work for you as a photographer. When you arrive, the first thing that hits you is how the ancient trees create this natural cathedral overhead, the way golden light filters through layers of leaves, and that peaceful sound of water moving over smooth rocks.

On M & J’s March wedding day, the air carried that perfect cool crispness with just a hint of earthiness from recent California rain. The moody weather couldn’t have been more perfect for their vision.

M’s faboulous black wedding dress from CocoMelody was perfect. Her vibrant red hair provided this gorgeous pop of color against the darker elements, and when she added her delicate veil, the contrast was absolutely stunning.

Meanwhile, J was getting ready in his rich burgundy suit that perfectly complemented M’s black dress choice. Watching them prepare separately but with the same excited energy was such a joy to document. You could feel how much thought they’d put into every detail, from the jewel-tone florals to the way their wedding party’s green dresses and flower crowns would coordinate with the natural canyon backdrop.

As someone who works with couples who want to feel comfortable and celebrated for exactly who they are, I loved watching M & J’s confidence shine through every moment. They weren’t trying to fit into anyone else’s idea of what a wedding should look like, they were creating something entirely their own.

Ceremony Magic Under Topanga’s Natural Cathedral

The ceremony space at Inn of the Seventh Ray creates this incredible natural amphitheater where your guests feel intimately connected to your moment while still being surrounded by Topanga’s wild beauty. For M & J’s Inn of the Seventh Ray wedding, we used the existing stonework and water features as our backdrop, letting their bold styling choices really shine against the organic textures.

What I love most about photographing ceremonies here is how the natural light changes throughout the day. During M & J’s afternoon ceremony, we had this gorgeous filtered sunlight coming through the tree canopy, creating these dreamy pockets of light and shadow that felt almost otherworldly, perfect for their dark and whimsical theme.

The moment M walked down the aisle, you could see J’s face just light up completely. These are the candid, genuine moments that make my heart sing as a photographer. No posed expressions, no forced smiles, just pure joy and love radiating between two people who were about to promise forever to each other.

Their vows were personal, funny, and deeply moving. They referenced inside jokes, shared memories, and dreams for their future that had everyone laughing one moment and tearing up the next. As a Topanga wedding photographer who’s captured countless ceremonies, I can tell you that the couples who bring their authentic selves to their vows always create the most memorable moments.

Creative Portraits That Felt Like Album Art

After the ceremony, we took advantage of Inn of the Seventh Ray’s incredible variety of photo locations for their couple portraits. This venue gives you everything from romantic garden nooks to dramatic stonework to those famous twinkle lit dining areas.

For M & J’s dark and whimsical vision, we played with contrast everywhere we went. Her black dress against the lush green foliage. His burgundy suit next to weathered stone walls. The bright jewel tones of her bouquet pop against the more muted natural backdrop.

But here’s my favorite tip for anyone planning an Inn of the Seventh Ray wedding: schedule at least ten minutes after sunset for creative portraits. Once all the formal family photos are done and the reception is getting started, that’s when couples are most relaxed. The pressure is off, you’re feeling the celebration energy, and that’s when some of the most fun, truly “you” images happen.

For M & J, we created these moody, artistic shots using lighting set up and natural shadows. It felt like we were creating album art for the band they haven’t started yet, which is exactly the vibe I was going for.

These after-dark portraits captured their personalities in a way that traditional golden-hour photos never could have. Sometimes the best wedding photos happen when you’re willing to break the rules and try something different.

A Wild, Joyful Dance Floor Celebration

And then, of course, there was the dancing, which was absolutely everything.

The reception space at Inn of the Seventh Ray transforms into this magical dance bubble once the sun goes down. Twinkle lights create a canopy overhead, warm tones reflect off the brick patio floor, and the surrounding windows add just the right amount of sparkle. It’s simultaneously cozy and high-energy, intimate and celebratory.

M & J’s crowd absolutely did not hold back, which made my job as their photographer so incredibly fun.

J delivered this full-body air-guitar performance that had literally everyone screaming and cheering. Friends were dropping low on the brick floor, singing along to every single word of their favorite songs. M’s gorgeous red hair was flying as she spun around with her bridesmaids in their coordinating green dresses and flower crowns.

There were spontaneous group hugs, completely off-key group choruses, and that kind of uninhibited joy you can only capture when people feel completely safe to be their authentic selves. This is exactly why I love working with couples who prioritize creating an inclusive, comfortable environment for their celebration.

My Absolute Favorite Shots are the Unposed Ones.

From behind my camera, my absolute favorite shots were the completely unposed ones. J mid-song with his hands up like he was performing on stage at Madison Square Garden. M laughing so hard her eyes were crinkled shut, veil long gone, makeup slightly smudged from all the hugging and dancing, looking absolutely radiant with pure happiness.

When couples tell me they want their wedding photos to “feel like the actual night” rather than just documenting it, this kind of celebration is exactly what I think of. These are the images they’ll look back on in twenty years and immediately be transported back to how the music felt, how their friends’ voices sounded, how their hearts felt so full they might burst.

Why Inn of the Seventh Ray Was Perfect for This Dark & Whimsical Vision

If you’re dreaming up your own unconventional, colorful wedding celebration, Inn of the Seventh Ray in Topanga creates this incredible canvas that supports bold creative choices. Here’s exactly why it worked so beautifully for M & J’s vision:

Nature does the heavy lifting. The canyon’s natural greenery, existing stonework, and water features create this organic backdrop that supports dramatic styling instead of competing with it. Your bold colors and creative details get to be the stars.

Lighting options everywhere you look. From gorgeous natural light during afternoon ceremonies to string lights and candles creating ambiance at dinner, there are endless opportunities to play with light and shadow, essential for any couple wanting moody, artistic photos.

Intimate layout that brings people together. Guests feel connected and close enough to really participate in your celebration, but there are still plenty of tucked-away corners and private spots for romantic couple portraits.

Neutral base that makes strong colors pop. The venue’s brick, stone, and natural greenery let bold choices like M’s black dress, J’s burgundy suit, and their jewel-tone florals really shine without feeling overwhelming.

Flexibility for non-traditional elements. Whether you want to incorporate nerdy themes, or celebrate your LGBTQ+ identity, this venue embraces couples who want to do things their own way.

If you’re looking for an Inn of the Seventh Ray wedding photographer who gets genuinely excited when you say “we want something completely different,” I’m absolutely your person.

Planning Your Own Dark & Whimsical Wedding Celebration

You don’t have to copy M & J’s exact wedding to capture that same feeling of authentic celebration. Instead, think about these elements when planning your own non-traditional wedding:

Your favorite types of stories. Are you drawn to fantasy novels, horror films, cozy mysteries, or sci-fi adventures? Pull colors, moods, and even specific details from the stories that speak to your soul.

Objects you love collecting. M & J incorporated specimen cloches and vintage curiosities. Maybe your passion is vintage books, vinyl records, crystals, seashells, or gaming memorabilia. These personal collections make the most meaningful decor.

How you want your day to actually feel. Cozy and intimate? Dramatic and theatrical? Mischievous and playful? Once you’re clear on the emotional experience you want, we can choose lighting, locations, and timing to match perfectly.

Elements of your identity you want to celebrate. Whether that’s your LGBTQ+ identity, your cultural background, your shared hobbies, or your quirky sense of humor, your wedding should feel like the most authentic version of yourselves.

As both a photographer and content creator, I approach every Inn of the Seventh Ray wedding like we’re telling a complete narrative together. Not just capturing “pretty pictures,” but documenting a full story from quiet morning moments to the last chaotic dance floor song.

Working with a Photographer Who Celebrates Your Authentic Self

One of the biggest concerns I hear from couples planning non-traditional weddings is worry about finding a photographer who will truly understand and celebrate their vision. Will they get our humor? Do they make us feel comfortable being ourselves? Will they capture the real moments, not just the posed ones?

At Trista Maja Photography, I specialize in working with couples who have colorful, quirky, and completely authentic love stories to tell. Whether you’re including your pets in the ceremony, incorporating your favorite fandoms into your decor, or simply want vibrant photos that reflect your bold personalities, I’m here to make sure your wedding photos feel like the truest version of your relationship.

I have extensive experience creating inclusive, comfortable environments where all identities are celebrated. My LGBTQ+ couples consistently tell me how much they appreciate having a photographer who doesn’t just tolerate their identity, but actively celebrates it and helps them feel confident and beautiful throughout their entire wedding day.

If you’re the type of couple who gets excited about trying new things, breaking traditional wedding rules, and creating an experience that feels completely and authentically yours, we’re going to work together beautifully.
